An implant replaces the root of the tooth, not just the part you can see. That is what stops the bone in that part of the jaw from shrinking away, which is the thing a bridge or a denture cannot do.
We plan from a 3D scan before the day of surgery — where the nerve runs, how much bone there is, and exactly where the implant should sit to be restorable. Surgery planned on a two-dimensional X-ray is how implants end up in the wrong place.
The surgery itself is usually a single visit under local anaesthetic, with sedation if you would rather. Then the implant is left alone for several months to integrate with the bone before the crown is made and fitted.
